Team CFES Giving Underserved Students a Running Start toward College

Where Team CFES Funds Go

Funds from Team CFES are used to support activities for our CFES Scholars all over the country, usually for events that go above and beyond regularly scheduled ones.

College Explore group

The whole group from the UNC College Explore on their last day.

Early this month, 70 CFES Scholars from Denver, the Western Slope of Colorado, and the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota participated in a College Explore program at the University of Northern Colorado. These students spent 4 days living in dorms, participating in workshops, and getting a real taste of campus life. All costs, from lodging to transportation, were covered entirely with funds raised by Team CFES in 2009. With your support, we can offer programs like this to even more Scholars next summer!

Fundraising Progress

An Update from Team CFES Director Ben Smith:

The response to Team CFES in 2010 has been tremendous, with 27 runners from Vermont to North Carolina training, fundraising, and supporting the Team CFES mission at the Marine Corps Marathon and 10K race on October 31st!

As of today, we have 27 runners signed on for both the Marathon and the 10K, and they have already begun fundraising. In fact, Team CFES has already raised $3,340 toward our $250,000 goal! Top fundraisers include Leroy Prempeh of Atlanta, GA, Julie Robinson of Charlestown, MA, and Amy Singer of North Carolina. Keep up the good work!

Fundraising Incentives

Members of Team CFES have graciously agreed to raise at least $1,500 to support activities that help CFES students take steps toward college. These activities include mentoring programs, college visits, and leadership training. For runners who raise additional dollars by the October 1 deadline, CFES is offering the following incentives:

  • Pair of running shoes, running jacket, and shirt
  • Hotel accommodations in DC for two nights
  • Transportation (flight/train/mileage) to DC

Raise $2,500 Total = One of the three items listed above
Raise $3,500 Total = Two of the three items listed above
Raise $4,500 Total = All three of the items listed above

Marine Corps Marathon Update

The DC Marine Corps Marathon is a little more than 4 months away! Check out the course description from the MCM website:

The USATF certified route starts in Arlington, VA, and winds its way through Rosslyn along Lee Highway before turning on Spout Run and the George Washington Parkway. Runners will experience a climb on Lee Highway in the first few miles of the course, but are rewarded with a descent along Spout Run and the Parkway.

After crossing Key Bridge into Georgetown, runners turn toward the Palisades Community when the course follows Canal Road, up to the reservoir and down MacArthur Boulevard. The course guides runners down popular M Street in Georgetown.

Runners will turn on Wisconsin Avenue and then K Street. The course passes the Kennedy Center and takes runners into Hains Point at approximately the halfway point of the race.

Outside Potomac Park, runners pass the Jefferson Memorial before entering the National Mall and running by landmarks like the Lincoln, FDR, Korean War and Vietnam Veteran's memorials, Washington Monument, and the U.S. Capitol. Runners continue along Jefferson Drive and turn onto 14th Street to "Beat the Bridge" at Mile 20 before returning to Virginia.

For the last 10K runners will venture to color and energy of Crystal City, pass the Pentagon and charge the hill to the finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial. It is truly a beautiful course and aptly nicknamed "The Marathon of the Monuments."

Harlem Service Saturday

We had a great event for NYC-area Team CFES volunteers earlier this month. A group of Harlem students and Team CFES members joined together at St. Nicholas park for Harlem Service Saturday. They helped clean up the park and make their neighborhood a better place. Check out the pictures below:

Welcome!

Welcome to the Team CFES blog!

Team CFES is a talented and energetic group of young professionals who volunteer and raise money to help underserved students get to college and be successful there. One hundred percent of every dollar raised goes directly to programs that support CFES scholars, 90 percent of whom live at or below the poverty line. Team CFES will prove its strength once again in 2010 by going back to DC on Sunday October 31 with the same goal in mind, only this time with more feet on the ground.

We have a lot of people already signed up to run on October 31 in DC! To sign up, click here.
