2010 National Conference

Creating a National Culture of College-Going, Nov. 12-13

Burlington, VT

Join us at the Burlington Hilton in Burlington, Vermont, on Friday and Saturday, November 12-13, for the 2010 CFES National Conference. This year's theme: "Creating a National Culture of College-Going."

Erin Gruwell will kick off this year's event. Gruwell began her teaching career in a large, diverse inner-city school fractured by racial tensions. Many of her students were deemed "unteachable," given up on by other educators and destined for lives tainted by gang violence and drugs.

Driven by her love of teaching, Gruwell was determined to harness the power of education to transform troubled lives. What transpired is captured in the book Freedom Writer's Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. And it's the subject of a 2007 feature film, Freedom Writers.

Herman Boone, the Virginia football coach who inspired the film Remember the Titans, will address participants on Friday evening. Coach Boone will share the real-life story of his team's amazing first season, and the lessons he learned in diversity, tolerance, and teamwork.

Also speaking at the National Conference: Greg Darnieder, Advisor to the Secretary of Education on College Access. Working closely with Secretary Arne Duncan, Mr. Darnieder has helped make the Department of Education more open and transparent, traveling all over the country to hear new ideas and share information on the Department’s initiatives.

These featured speakers headline two days of workshops, panels, and discussions designed to help CFES educators cultivate a culture of college-going in their schools.

Further information about the conference, including the fee schedule, room rates, and program agenda, will be posted in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please contact CFES.
